Community DNA
St. Petersburg Police Department

As shared by the artist, Catherine Woods, the sculpture which is titled ‘Community DNA’ is an abstracted guardian figure—a protector of the community. It was designed to represent the heroic dignity of the St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) and the department’s commitment to the community. Inspired by ‘shield’ shapes, modular forms comprise the abstract guardian figure. The shield has been used for centuries for protection and has a rich visual history. Like the ‘Thin Blue Line’, this iconic form represents the SPPD as protection from harm.

The images honoring the diversity of the St. Petersburg community were photographed by the artist and incorporated into abstract collages. The artist took thousands of photos of St. Petersburg landmarks, buildings, neighborhoods and parks to incorporate into the artwork, which was painted onto the glass utilizing GGI’s Alice® direct-to-glass printing process.
